Pumice

What is it?

Medium-lightweight, porous volcanic material formed when gas-rich volcanic lava cools rapidly. Its porous structure provides aeration, drainage and moisture retention while remaining stable in the substrate.

Holds moisture inside its pores
Creates air spaces around roots
Improves drainage
Keeps the substrate lightweight
Provides long-lasting structure
Helps prevent compaction

Our experience with pumice is currently limited. We sometimes use it as a substitute for lava rock when lava rock is unavailable, as they appear to behave similarly in our mineral mixes.

💡 Key point: We currently treat pumice as a potential alternative to lava rock, but further testing is needed to properly compare their behavior.

We have not tested pumice extensively enough in our own setups to make stronger claims yet.
