What is it?

Highly absorbent organic material commonly used for propagation, rooting and growing plants that prefer a moist but airy environment. Its lightweight structure can hold a large amount of water while still leaving air around the roots.

Holds a very large amount of water
Keeps roots surrounded by moisture
Provides air pockets when not compressed
Creates a soft environment for developing roots

Sphagnum is an excellent moisture-retention helper, but not our preferred standalone substrate.

We use it in moss poles and for really soft TC acclimatization.

💡 Key point: Not our ideal everyday substrate, but as a moisture-retention helper and rescue tool, it is extremely useful.

It is a reliable rescue material when a plant starts struggling and needs more consistent moisture.

Used alone in moss poles, it can dry surprisingly quickly. Re-saturating it can then be difficult and may lead to overwatering.
